What is this country coming to?

October 22, 2007 · Filed Under Life in general

See the sad news report here from the BBC. This is exactly the reason why people commit more violent crime, because they can get away with it. Disgusting. Video evidence. Witnesses. What more do they want? I would be in more trouble if caught speeding on the motorway. Un – be – lievable.

Do you think this country is too geared towards helping people who are criminals or lazy? I think it probably is. Controversial yes, but true, probably. It seems if you are honest and hard working you have a tough job of getting by and not getting fleeced at every turn. One thing which is REALLY starting to annoy me is Council Tax. Just what exactly am I getting for £130 per month? I don’t use the NHS, (relatively fit and healthy). I don’t use the Police and they seem to be more interested in catching people doing 42 in a 40 than capturing any real criminals and I certainly don’t see much else which my money is paying for. Looking outside the window, the street is filthy, covered with leaves and generally leaves a lot to be desired. So, my £130 is paying for a once per week rubbish collection. Marvellous. Top value for money.

Well, I say the above, slightly tongue in cheek, but I don’t think it’s far off to be honest. I wonder if there are other countries where there is a decent standard of living and where honest people are treated well and looked after? Perhaps Canada or the Scandinavian countries. I quite fancy living there!

(Rant over),

What makes you think the guy who hit the old man was “lazy?” Far from it, he was quite motivated to be a jerk.

I think you have the wrong idea here: it’s the same as what the US does with capital punishment and what we’re doing in Iraq: retribution and revenge gets you nothing in return, absolutely nothing except more violence. And, now you’re party of it. Lovely.

I’d say your attitude toward the attacker, while seemingly justified, is not much higher ground than his attitude toward the old man.

The way to cure this ill is not to punish but to lead by example so that behavior like this is far from the norm. In a culture of violence where people get tortured daily, it’s kind of hard to get down on some guy who hits someone else.

    Okay, lay into it. ;)

    Peace.

Oh man, where do I start ;-)

I really do understand what you re saying, but to me, this kind of thing seems to be an open invitation for people to do wrong, be violent and get away with it. Weak sentencing and punishment means these people think the consequences are not THAT bad.

I agree, we should lead by example and I try to do that, treating people just how I want to be treated, but generally is that working? I don’t think so.

I find it east to get down on the attacker – he should not have done it. Period. Full stop. And to man of 97!? No excuse whatsover in my book.

Either way, revenge or understanding, it is not working now and it’s getting worse – I have no answer I’m afraid.

    Give em a break.
People like that don’t learn from good examples. You really are living in a dream world.
Do you honestly think that someone who will blind an old war vet because his hat was accidentally knocked off gives a rip about a good example?
