Nick Hand and Slowcoast

I first met Nick at the Do Lectures last year. We instantly got on with our love for Canon gear, photography, and Macs

It was by chance we met once again at Liverpool’s b.tween event last week, so it was great to catch up and chat. He did tell me about a little, or rather, large adventure which begins for him on Sunday.

And a very good example of how email marketing should work! A nice email from howies, something I look out for, with a product I like, so a simple click, and purchase and it’s on its way to me!

howies seem to send some nice emails – well written, often with offers, and always fun and friendly. They’re always on brand too, and I bet, they have a great subscriber list and not too many unsubscribes!

Tim Ferriss Answers some Questions and Hints of a New Book

A good few months ago, I was lucky enough to attend The Do Lectures organised by howies. I posted about it when I came back, but now, I’ve finally got round to writing up this – a small interview with Mr Tim Ferriss. Tim was talking at the do lectures and having read his book and subscribed to his blog for some time, I was really looking forward to meeting him.

Tim kindly spent half and hour talking about life, politics and the web, so read on:

What has been your best accomplishment in life so far and also 2008?

Not dying when I was 6 weeks old – I was premature and my blood volume was transfused 5 times.
In 2008, I’m still following my own advice after the success of the 4HWW.

What is your favourite city and why?

SF because of creativity, support for big ideas for even unproven people, pure natural beauty – you can drive to your season in one and half hours.

What are the best and worst parts of global travel?

The best – new cultures and new languages.
The worst – con artists on the road.

How could we improve global travel?

Do more global travel – more stamps in your passport – fewer problems.

What do you want to do for 2009?

Drop out of the limelight / media for 6 months and explore more of SF.

Mac or PC?

Mac – (even Macs have problems – “intuitive my ass!”)

McCain or Obama?

“Used to be a staunch Obama supporter – I think all politicians are liars, and Obama has waffled about too many issues for me to have the same level of confidence. I still favour Obama, but he is not a saviour to fix all world and US problems. Nor do I think McCain is the harbinger of doom. Difference in presidencies in either candidate are overestimated”.

Where do you see the web going in the future?

Inseperable from other items like watches, cellphones and TV. It will be inescapable.

What are your 3 favourite websites / blogs?

How do you plan to change your blog / website going forwards?

Make the blog more interactive – allow visitors to contribute in a more visible way beyond comments.

Is there going to be a 4HWW 2?!

There is another book in development – nothing to do with work / life balance and productivity. Much more controversial and much more interesting than 4HWW. It probably won’t come out for 1.5-2 years, I’d imagine.

You have a small duffel bag and are going away for the weekend… what do you pack?

He also said – athletic tape, Kerhsaw knife, headlamp, book or Kindle (excellent for travel but not used it enough yet), one change of clothes, sunglasses and cash.

Lastly what countries would you like to visit?

Vietnam – friendly people and great food experienced from best friend
Indonesia – would love to scuba dive there and see orangutans

So, huge thanks to Tim for answering my questions. From a personal point of view, it was fascinating to meet someone who has had so much media coverage, especially online. From spending a little time with Tim, it was immediately apparent he practices what he preaches – he is very focused, very intuitive and makes the most of every minute and interaction.

10 Tips for Surviving Train Journeys

I recently traveled down from Hull to Torquay on business which meant a 6 hour journey and luckily, only a couple of changes (but could have been many more).

Train travel is a much better option for business, because as we all know, it means that you can (hopefully) get some work done, and you don’t end up being completely shattered after a big drive. However, there are a number of tips which I suggest when you are going by rail.

Don’t take too many bags. There’s nothing worse than struggling about with mulitple bags, and also finding places where to put them. I usually travel with my Tom Bihn Empire Builder Laptop bag, and a Tumi roll on. These two bags are both a good few years old, but look virtually new and are perfect mix of form, design and function.
Book a seat. No excuse not to nowadays. You can use thetrainline.com and they post you your tickets. There was a real shortage of seats on the main line was on, and it is no fun standing.
Get some noise cancelling headphones. These are essential for any sort of travel and make a real difference to your quality of journey. There are many sorts available, but my Bose ones have been going strong for 5 years and I would not travel without them.
A decent book (or two). Check out my recommendations here.
The Trains iPhone app which you can get from the App Store here. This will tell you all the departing and arriving trains from any station in the UK – I’ve just downloaded this and it is excellent.
A light weight laptop. My current MBP is not cutting it right now, too heavy and a little slow The Air or a Linux Acer One is now looking very tempting, but hanging fire until Apple have a refresh and I can afford one!
Bring your own food and drink. The stuff available onboard is not the best and way overpriced.
Make sure you put your mobile on silent. This is not a hard thing to do you would think, but the amount of people who don’t bother is staggering. It is rude, ignorant and annoying. Especially if you have the “Final Countdown” as your ringtone.
Make sure people know you are on a train if they want to speak to you. The reception, even on mainlines, is rubbish and you will spend the whole time having dropped calls. So don’t schedule any telecons as it won’t work, and long loud phone conversations are rude, ignorant and annoying.
Dress appropriately. If you can avoid it, don’t wear a suit. It will be trashed. Something lightweight and warm is my preference, howies merino stuff does the job well.

Now I know I said 10 tips, but here is one extra for free. Travel in first class if you can. You may even get some work done.

PS Try to avoid the carriage where two “professional” dog owners have decided to bring their 4 dogs and two travel cages onboard.
