Mobile payments coming

December 11, 2009 · Filed Under Apple stuff, Web

Mobile payment is something I really hope takes off in the future.

I’m sure it is not far away, and with Jack Dorsey (founder of twitter) launching square recently, it is not only exciting for the customer but also the seller.

Square is certainly aimed more at a small seller, company or person who does not want to go down the route of getting an account to have a machine to take payments. The hardware is a little “square” which plugs into a headphone jack of a device, an iPhone is featured heavily on the website and makes a lot of sense in terms of screen size and functionality.

It certainly looks very cool, and with authenticated seller features, not too mention emailing receipts and touch signatures, I would be VERY interested in knowing more about if I needed to take credit card payments.

Interestingly, Verifone has just launched Payware Mobile, which looks like a bit of a knee jerk response to square’s arrival on the scene. Jack Dorsey from twitter / square gives his reaction below.

Payments for customers and not sellers

This, to be honest, is the area which really interests me and where I think the next generation of mobiles will really shine.
I don’t want to have to carry round a wallet and my iPhone. I’d ideally like to pay for things by using my iPhone, and this, I am sure will happen soon. Not sure how, but it will happen.

Imagine paying for a coffee wirelessly by waving your iPhone at some receptive device, or even receiving a text from the shop you are in asking for payment confirmation, where you sign something with your finger. (Look at square’s sign here screen below – very slick indeed).

Speaking of iPhones, I can upgrade to a 3GS tomorrow, but with rumours coming on strong about the iPhone 4G coming mid 2010, I am seriously considering holding off.

I’m getting a little annoyed with the lag on my 3G model, but having to wait another 12 months if the next version is launched next summer would be a little frustrating.

Anyway, what do you think? Mobile payments something you would welcome?
And the dilemma of the iPhone upgrade – what would you do!?

I’m honestly tempted to wait till summer before I upgrade my iPhone. I have a 1st gen model which is still doing me proud, another month or so to wait is nothing in the grand scheme of things. And if there’s no sign of a 4G – meh!

Traditionally I’m the guy who buys just before a big upgrade, so this is my chance to (try! to shine :)

I’d hold off on the iPhone upgrade. Permanently. Seriously, Android is where it’s at ;)
