Magically better than Mighty?

The Apple Mighty Mouse was certainly not mighty. Far from it in many users’ eyes. I must admit I didn’t mind it 90% of the time.

The 10% frustration was aimed at the roller ball, which, as documented all over the web, did stop working, did get bunged up, and did cause headaches. Cleaning, blowing, removing the detritus, all worked. In some cases.

So, that brings us onto the Magic Mouse, and it really is pretty good. Ordered from Apple yesterday afternoon, shipped last night and delivered by UPS this afternoon. Impressive. Well packaged, and slick plastic packaging was followed by a sticky moment trying to get the mouse the tray it came in. Eventually I managed it, but leaving sticky residue on it (soon sorted out). It really was glued down a little too well….

Anyway, turned over, turned on, and nothing.  I  plugged in the trusty Might Mouse, clicked on Mouse preferences and pair Bluetooth Mouse…. and bingo, off we went, so pretty painless. A quick check of Software Update gave me a whopping 60+MB file to download, and a restart later I was looking at the special options.

First impressions

Good, very good. Feels different to the predecessor, but has a much more positive click, is heavier, feels better quality, and the best bit, the scroll using your fingertips. Intuitive within minutes, maybe even seconds.

It really does feel great, and seems to work flawlessly. There is one big drawback, and something which I will miss from the Mighty version and that is the click for Expose or the Dashboard. Reading the review over on the Apple Store, it looks like this is the one thing people are missing. I’m pretty certain we will get an update at some point to do some new things like these, but for the moment, I’m managing fine with the keyboard, and about to allocate some hot corners.

Big thumbs up then, and lastly a quick pic of the Magical device itself :-)
