I slept through the quake

I cannot believe it - just listening to the Radio 4 reports of the earthquake that happened just before 1am last night. BBC news site covers it here.
I did not hear, or feel a thing!!!! Kate woke up almost screaming and I thought she was having a bad dream! Apparently is was like a huge train going past the window - a very low frequency noise and shaking. I am pretty miffed I missed it!

Woke me up in Southport! Just a low rumble but the whole house was vibrating

I was standing in the kitchen at just before 1am and I felt a very very slight shake of the house. I dismissed it as being the wind as it was very windy here yesterday, although I did think it was a little odd since it had died down considerably last night. Obviously nothing like was experienced further down the country.

I didn’t really wake up properly, and I thought it was someone moving heavy machinery in the road next to the house. In our previous house we used to get similar levels of noise/movement when the quad track tractors went past, but in our current house we don’t ever really get that much noise. It was definitely much noisier than I ever heard when I lived in Banbury, just 20 yards away from the main train lines from London to Birmingham!

An hour later I got called out with the fire service, for standby duty at Skegness station, because one of their crews was out and their other fire engine had apparently broken down. What I found interesting was that (if I recall correctly, I was still half asleep!) they were called out at 01:58 for a flat fire, which has been attributed in the news to a candle being shaken over by the earthquake. An hour later? I don’t think so! Somebody’s insurance company ought to be looking closely at the timings…
