Karoo are the Kingston Communications ISP in Hull.
A few facts:

  1. They are a monopoly
  2. We have no choice to use them
  3. They are expensive
  4. They offer slow speeds

I’ve mentioned them a few times before - here, here and here. After having a quick look round at the prices at the moment, I see that BeThere Broadband offer a 24Mb line for £22.99 a month!!!! Honestly, we are getting so ripped off. Which led me to write a quick email to them last night. It has been acknowledged but I will not hold my breath.

Dear Sir /Madam

I was hoping you would be able to let me know when you are going to give value for money in regards to your broadband packages. This is not happening now.

You are VERY expensive compared to virtually all other ISPs in the UK.

I would welcome the opportunity to use someone else. When is this going to be allowed? I’m staggered that this monopoly can still go on.

I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Jon Moss

    Hi there,
your plea seems to have fallen on deaf ears, as usual.
KCOM do not have a monopoly (technically) but they do have a monopoly in reality.

OFCOM seem not too care (its easy to side step the issue) and unless a HUGE change in direction their forth coming recommendation is not likely to change anything.

Pop along to http://www.karooforums.net to look at what other Karoo users have to say about Karoo as an ISP, let me give you a heads up - its not nice!

The fact you have committed time and effort to contacting KCOM means you would be perfect to be a Choice Champion, somebody who is willing to contact alternative ISPs and ask them to come to town to offer a service..

BTW - a few of the reasons behind no competition for KC is a) their retail price for a Local Loop is around £1 less than they charge for public use.. Which means any comapny coming in would have to charge a lot more (they have to hire the lines from KC, the costs of the LLU and bandwidth to the internet also) - Anti-competitive me thinks..
    b) their infrastructure (copper cables etc) is of poorer quality than most of the rest of the country (though we cannot substantiate this the findings of speedtests show there is a problem)

For another ISP to enter town means a HUGE investment for that ISP to either use KCs infrastructure or create an alternative, both of which will never happen.

Anyway - pop along to http://www.karooforums.net - a website by Karoo’s users to promote change and choice in Hull and the East Riding.
