Just check out the speed of the web here in Stockholm, Sweden. I’ve been travelling since Tuesday and have had not a lot of time at all for blogging, but lots to come soon, well, next week some time!

Very impressed with Sweden and everyone at orb has been so friendly and welcoming! :-)

The US Election Via the Web

November 5, 2008 · Filed Under Web · Comments

4 years ago, when the US last voted, there was no twitter. There was no YouTube. The whole of the web, and the way that we consume media has completely changed in those 4 years. Where have people talked about the election and the candidates?

Online. On the blogs, the websites, on twitter, using the power of online maps to see what is happening. Using the reach of the web, so that a Mum in Ohio can broadcast what she wants to say, just as easily as a multinational news channel can.

I’ve been using some great sites like perspctv.com to watch real time tweets, blog posts and poll results. What will be fascinating is whether the UK election will have so much online activity. Will the Labour Party and Conversatives take adavntage of the web and really leverage it, to communciate with the online population? This slideshow shows just some of the ways that the web has been used over the past few weeks and months: from the excellent Read Write Web and flickr user SarahinTampa:

If I was Gordon Brown, (and he needs all the help he can get). I would be appointing someone now to help him fight the election online. Someone who knows the web and what it can do. Focus groups and engaging the different age groups. The UK online environment, like what happened in the US, is going to be the real battle ground in our next election.

I want to personally say a huge congratulations to Brack Obama - I have rarely been moved by someone who speaks so brilliantly, is so obviously thoughtful, caring, intelligent, and has such incredible maturity and poise. The US can now start to repair its worldwide reputation, where so many Americans have been ashamed of their past President.

It’s not often that a website really stands out….. but this one does - lisapmaxwell.com

They are an agency which has decided to go completely transparent, and I mean totally transparent! All the agency staff have webcams on them, showing live, what they are doing on the web. A simple concept, brilliantly executed on their website.

The site has some very clever functionality - the people can set their own window to green or amber (only seen when you roll over it) - giving viewers the signal they are available for a chat, or not. When you do click on someone, a bigger window appears and if they are in green mode, you can actually initiate a conversation!

I tried this out with their MD, and it worked perfectly. I think this is a great idea, beautifully done, and very different. Well done guys n’ gals! :-)

Climate Cars

Climate Cars, originally uploaded by JonnyMoss.

Climate Cars has struck me as a great company for 3 reasons. Number one - great concept of environmentally friendly, well-branded cars, focusing on great service and value. Number two - nicely designed website giving you all the information you could possibly want and online account registration. Thirdly, they are making great us eof technology with GPS tracking, GPS-enabled fares so mileage is accurately calculated.

It is nice to see, that something as “mundane” as a taxi service, can be well branded, bringing innovative service and design to their offering.

I am sure there are similar offerings in London, but this is the one that I have seen first (actually from a tweet from Melalicious). If anyone else know of companies who are doing something similar, perhaps in different cities, please let me know in the comments.

Google Maps - Undiscovered Features

October 18, 2008 · Filed Under Web · Comments

Catching up on my Feeds led to me to this very cool / informative video on the Official Google Blog.

Pretty cool eh? This is something that is becoming clearer to me all the time - I use only 10-20% of the features of the Google Apps and software which is available on the web. So much more to explore!

SoundCloud

SoundCloud: The Tour from SoundCloud on Vimeo.

Very impressed with SoundCloud - great concept, expertly executed. Will it be used for pirated music though?

The embedding of the music on your site is particularly impressive and really does look the part. I guess you could also do this with Podcasts and spoken audio enabling a very neat solution.

Google Streetview is an amazing use of technology, and it seems that even West Hull is going to appear!

Kudos to Mr Cleary for capturing this snap - I can imagine it was a dash for his camera, followed by a “huh?” from his Mrs ;-)

FOWA08

Open Talk at FOWA08, originally uploaded by JonnyMoss.

It’s been a hectic but excellent week, and still a day to go!

I’m attending the Future of Web Apps in London, at Excel, Docklands, and it has been an excellent first day. The week started coming down to London on good old Hull trains which was manageable and then headed into the city to meet with a good friend who has an amazing place just round the corner from Leicester Square. We managed to get to the Monmouth Street Coffee Shop and had a good catch up.

From there it was up to North London to stay with Anand, and we had some amazing Indian food, all home cooked by his wonderful wife. (I always look forward to the food!).

Tuesday morning compounded my view that London is great to visit but not to live in. A sweaty, crowded tube journey into Tottenham Court Road from North London, was more akin to a third world country. Awful. Anyone commuting on the tube every day, I truly pity you.

Tuesday day was an all day client meeting, and this was a bit of an eye opener. Old school DM, PR and agency strategy is alive and well, believe me. Had to bite my tongue on a number of occasions and was dismayed at some truly dreadful push, push, push tactics. It was then a private car down to Docklands to the Britannia International Hotel, which provides sedatives for when you enter your room and are greeted by a rainbow of bad colours and decor. Poor old Ian didn’t get down to London to late, so we did a midnight run the West End to his offices and had a late dinner in the excellent Wagamammas and then a hot choccy from Bar Italia.

After a somewhat awful sleep (Ian is a snoring world record holder), we headed to Excel to check out the exhibition build of FOWA. Having made the mistake of following a shocking night’s sleep with zero breakfast, we collapsed into All Bar One on Regent Street for a full English, juice and coffee. Ian scooted back to Docklands and I managed to have some most excellent relaxation at Libertys, where I found Murdocks. A traditional men’s barber, Murdocks, was just superb and I had a haircut and a wet shave. The last time I had a proper wet shave was over 14 years ago at the Harrods Barber shop.

From here, it was to the shrine for some worshiping and a small purchase. Then home, another run to the West End, dinner in South Kensington and a late return. Sum of all of this? Shattered!

Then today it was the first full day of FOWA, kicked off my the big Keynote from Digg’s Kevin Rose. This was hugely dissapointing to be honest. Short, and rather basic. Sorry Kevin, I was expecting so much more! The rest of the day’s speakers were ok, nothing brilliant, and I am now back at the hotel using the lobby WiFi. (I got the train from Excel to Canary Wharf and went to the Canada Squre shopping place for some dinner).

I did get to talk to Ted and Crick from Ribbit today which was great. I blogged about them a while ago and they then featured me on their blog. I am expecting great things of them!

Night all, time for some sleep! (and dreaming about a 10″ MacBook Air!).
