If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Christopher Chan is one of my fave photographers on flickr. After spending a little quality time browsing photos, I noticed Chris had posted up a few new photos, and then navigated my way to his Apple Store shots.

I love the blue and grey colours in this photo - superb.

Reverie is here

September 23, 2008 · Filed Under Photography · Comments

Reverie, the short film shot on a new 5D Mark II, by Vincent Laforet is now up on the Canon site - you can get the link from his blog here >> click. It really is stunning and is total proof that the game of filmaking has changed overnight.

The making of the film is available here too and is just as good, but not shot on the 5D Mk 2.

Laforet’s 5D Mk II Video is coming

September 22, 2008 · Filed Under Photography · Comments

The Canon 5D Mk II is BIG news at the moment. Vincent Laforet had one of the very first examples and Canon allowed him to shoot a video using the new 1080P HD filming over 3 days.

He’s just announced that he is going to be releasing the video he shot with the 5D MkII on his blog in the next 12 hours! There is also a behinds the scene film which was made and here’s a sneak preview from Vincent…

It is really starting to look like a revolution in photographer and I am sure there are many, many people drooling over this!

5D Mk II will change the industry

September 21, 2008 · Filed Under Photography · Comments

Vincent Laforet, one of my favourite photograohers got his hands on a 5D MkII Prototype and has been completely blown away.

Here is the story behind the short video that I produced with what I believe to be a “game changer”of a camera for the following reasons:

1. The 5D MKII camera produces the best stills in low light that I’ve ever seen - what you can see with you eye in the worst light (such as sodium-vapor street lights at 3 a.m. in Brooklyn) - this camera can capture it with ease.

2. It produces the best video in low light that I’ve ever seen - at 1080p. A top commercial film editor who who regularly edits RED camera footage - and has seen the raw footage from the 5D MKII - says the 5D MKII is “far superior to the RED camera” in terms of low light performance…

3. You can use your prime and zoom lenses from your Canon still cameras with it - and shoot wide open… so you can shoot films with fisheye lenses, 50mm 1.2 as well as the 200mm f2 or 400mm 2.8 that you may already own…

4. This camera is so easy to use - that you can work incredibly quickly, mostly handheld - without a huge production - and using natural light - ergo you don’t need a huge budget and tons of preparation anymore… forget the lighting trucks and generators that take up entire city blocks…

5. This camera will sell for approx. $2,700 - and perform better than many $100K plus video cameras out there…

6. Photojournalists in particular - will be able to take full advantage of this camera’s strengths - because they are used to walking into any room, and finding the best natural “available light” in the room - or knowing how to add a single light source to make it pop… they are used to working quickly and with small or no budgets… which is something this camera is begging you to do…

It has the potential to change our industry.

I am really looking forward to seeing the footage he shot. This is starting to look like a camera I am interested in. I shoot a little bit of video for clients, (only for podcasts, YouTube etc), but if it’s this good, has an external mic input and also has fantastic low light ability, my current 5D is going to be for sale soon.

5D Mark 2 is here

The Canon 5D Mk2

After a LONG wait, Canon have finally announced their successor to the infamous 5D Mark 1.

The 5 D Mark 2 looks pretty amazing full specs here on the new Canon 5D MarkII page.

Highlights:

* 21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor
* DIGIC 4 processor
* ISO range expandable to 25600
* Full HD (1080, 30fps) movie recording
* High-res 3.0” VGA LCD with Live View
* 3.9fps JPEG shooting up to card capacity
* 9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points
* Magnesium alloy body

The reviews will be coming in soon I am sure. I know that there is some concern about the size of the sensor, but Canon are promising low noise, so we shall wait and see!

UPDATE - DPN have a great review and some excellent media pics here.

Tshirt project

September 2, 2008 · Filed Under Photography · Comments

I’m a big fan of cool tshirts - I’ve even started my own (very, very low key) brand here. I’m certain there will be some great tshirts, with logos, messages and designs on at the Do Lectures, so I am hoping to make a little project out of them.

Take a photo of each Tshirt and also a head shot of the person wearing it. Then put them all together in a big poster format possibly with everyone mixed up. Watch this space :-)

Super Quartz Screensavers and the 5D Mk 2

June 14, 2008 · Filed Under Photography, Tech · Comments

I’ve been looking at some of the ways that people reach the blog, and particularly keywords. Here are the top keywords from over the last month:

theappleofmyi top keyboards

So, you can see that 5D Mk2 comes out on top, just and then quartz screensavers. I blogged about Canon’s rumoured new baby here, but there are quite a few new rumours cropping up most weeks and this site seems to be keeping track of them all - good job guys! Canon are currently running cash back on a number of bodies, and the 5D is included. Could this be as sign? Only Canon knows…..

As to quartz screensavers - these are by far the best ones I have seen and are free! (I blogged about these here back in 2007 and that post seems to have been ranked well by Google).

Lastly, Auto-Glyn is a great blog from Glyn O’Donnell (disclosure, I set it up for him as a client). Glyn is one of the very best detailers in the UK and looks after some stunning cars - take a look at the supercars here.

It’s interesting to see what keywords are driving traffic to your site, and as a business, you must know how and why people are finding you. The screengrab above is from Google Analytics - this is an amazing free service and I highly recommend it.

Drift Action at Silverstone and the waiting begins…

June 2, 2008 · Filed Under Photography · Comments

What do you get when you have a 4.40am alarm and a 10pm finish?

Yep, a very tired Jon. After 9 hours on my feet shooting the Time Attack and European Drift Series at Silverstone, I was ready for my bed! It was however a fantastic day - the weather held out, met some great people and managed to bag a fair few good photos (around 650 to process over the next few days!). Here is a sneak peak….

The waiting begins…

In one just over one week’s time, Mr Jobs will be standing up at the Apple WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) and should be announcing iPhone 2. Ok, it is not as big an event as last year’s initial launch, but it could be pretty good.

Personally I hope that I can upgrade to the new phone for a small cost, but I think it is highly unlikely. As to new features, I would be looking for 3G support and accompanying video conferencing, as well as a cool new design. I know a few of you guys have iPhones, (Andy, Ian), so what do you guys think? Would you upgrade or perhaps try to sell your old phone?

More photography abuse

April 21, 2008 · Filed Under Photography · Comments

Can you believe this? Some misinformed rent a cop trying to detain someone in a public place from taking photos. We really need to know our rights as people like this obviously do not. Awful.

flickr video

April 12, 2008 · Filed Under Internet, Photography · Comments

Yep, I am well behind posting about this, but thought I needed to mention it as it is a big step for them, not only in their infrastructure but also for their user base. There have been protests already about videos diluting the brand value of flickr, i.e. photos only, but I’m not too sure now. The big reason for them to do it is that video is growing massively on the web, and video recorders are getting better and better and HD is now available to the masses. flickr have a couple of simple rules: under 90 seconds and not more than 150mb per video. They are specifically not wanting people to upload huge videos, they want the videos to compliment the photos.

I’ve just bought the Aiptek HD recorder from Amazon (you seriously need one of these - I’ve set up a little banner for you to click on the right hand side of the blog which will give me a kick back from Amazon) ;-) and the quality is amazing. Check out a client video podcast here, and also my Gumball video here.

Here’s my first flickr video for reference!
