Papers Review on BBC Radio Humberside

June 27, 2009 · Filed Under Business, Tech · Comment

A big thanks to Ruth Barcroft, the BBC Radio Humberside DJ, (who does the Saturday morning show) who invited me in to review the papers this morning. It meant an early start but was great fun and look forward to doing it again very soon!

So, when is Google Voice coming to the UK?

June 27, 2009 · Filed Under Web · 2 Comments

Google Voice looks superb. But I’ve not heard anything about plans to launch in the UK. Ribbit also impresses me (bought by BT) and again, nothing concrete for a UK launch. This is really starting to tick me off. So, anyone who knows anything, please post something!

UPDATE: I’m hearing rumours that we may get it at the end of the year but I’m not holding my breath. You can follow them on twitter here.

In the meantime, check out the Google Voice video:

UPDATE December 27th 2009 for all you US people

Google Voice mobile for the iPhone is looking rather good. Unfortunately it only works on jailbroken iPhones at the moment. Gizmodo have a short but worthwhile post on it here. What is not clear to me is whether this is an “official” Goolge app or an unofficial one.

Anyway, what we want, is just plain old Google Voice for the UK!

If only more companies were like Google

Objectified film

June 24, 2009 · Filed Under design · Comment

If, like me, you love design, the new film Objectified is going to be right up your street.

Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability.

If I use something every day, it is SO much better to get pleasure from it. From the look. From the feel. From the usability. From the ease of use. From the design. My mobile. My computers. My house phones. Light switches. Lamps. The list goes on.

What do you covet in terms of design?

UPDATE - Steve has already commented on this post and we have just spoken on the phone, so any donations are going to be made to www.coffeekids.org

If you fancy donating something, you can do it direct on their site here :)

——————————————————————–

For those of you have met Steve Leighton, you won’t forget him. He is one of the most generous, kind, thoughtful and top chaps you could hope to meet. He does so much for other people, both in this country and for the people he meets on his coffee travels in Africa, and South America.

He never asks for anything back, he just gives, and that deserves recognition and in this case, us giving something back to him.

A fellow Mac fanboy and a lost iPhone

Steve and I started keeping in touch after I began to order my coffee from him and we had that fateful “ooo, you’re a Mac fanboy too!” conversation ;-)

He was VERY excited to get his first iPhone before all of us, and then his 3G and then his 3GS last Friday. Unfortunately, he has now lost it :(

And this is where we come in. As I’ve stated before, Steve always gives, and in this case we can help someone who really deserves it.

My suggestion is that we buy Steve his new phone. He has many, many customers, and so if everyone gives a little, it will all add up very quickly :)

So, I think the best thing to do is to use PayPal. My paypal email address is

jonmoss at mac.com

Please mark donations “hasbean Steve iPhone fund” and just send what you can :) For starters, I’m giving a tenner, the very least I can do for all the generosity Steve has given me personally over the years. (If anyone has a better suggestion, don’t be shy and let me know quickly!).

I’m sure with the power of the web, we can soon get this moving, so please retweet, please blog about this and link to this post.

Steve you are a star mate, and you truly deserve something back after all the times you have given.

Nick Hand and Slowcoast

I first met Nick at the Do Lectures last year. We instantly got on with our love for Canon gear, photography, and Macs :-)

It was by chance we met once again at  Liverpool’s b.tween event last week, so it was great to catch up and chat. He did tell me about a little, or rather, large adventure which begins for him on Sunday.

Slowcoast. So what’s all this then?! Well… simply put …

So, as you can see, this is not only an adventure of a lifetime, but something which is going to have some great outputs too. Nick is going to be coming past Hull, and so I’ll be catching up with him then :-)

You can follow his travels in a number of ways:

So, please do follow him on twitter and give him some support. All that remains is to say, have an amazing trip Nick and see you soon!
