New BBC Website
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I am seriously impressed with the new BBC site. It’s a real improvement on the old one which had started to look a little cluttered.
The new site has:
- a simple, clean layout
- some nice gradient effects
- great use of space
- customisable colourscheme
- uses Ajax or something similar which looks very slick
- dynamic windows which you can open and close, so it’s very similar to an iGoogle page
Great job Beeb, really great job. What do you all think?

Hats off to Clustarack who have put this together!
I must resist, I must resist

With the demise of HD-DVD (of which I have the Xbox 360 player), I am looking towards the time when I will need a Blu Ray player.
March 29th is apparently bringing us lucky folks in Europe, the Gran Turismo Prologue 5 PS3 bundle, which, price-dependent has me interested…… Not only do I get a competent Bluray player but also a PS3 gaming machine as well, plus one of the most eagerly anticipated games in history.
The growing popularity of the PS3 has, I am sure, led to the demise of HD DVD. The sheer critical mass of players sold, the movie studios going with Bluray and perhaps the marketing have all helped. Certainly from the outset the reviews seemed to agree that the Bluray format provided better quality, but I went for cost, as initially Bluray players were VERY expensive.
I would be interested to hear about what you all think…
Who has a DVD player?
Who has a HD-DVD player?
Who has a Bluray player?
Lastly, what will you buy, if anything, this year and beyond?

My client has had this very special watch in for a day - it is already sold!
One of 150 in the world with an 8 day Angelus movement (over 60 years old and completely reconditioned). A stunning piece and very, very rare!
New Desktop Client for flickr

This looks pretty cool - check it out here. Allows you to navigate around your pictures, upload new ones and also look at your contact’s photos + your groups.
They have a demo and then it’s $20 - seems a little high for me and I’ll stick with the browser for the time being.

It does a great job of showing the wealth of features. Not sure whether they will have stopped running Nick Haley’s ad now (I met him in the queue for Leopard in November!).
I slept through the quake
I cannot believe it - just listening to the Radio 4 reports of the earthquake that happened just before 1am last night. BBC news site covers it here.
I did not hear, or feel a thing!!!! Kate woke up almost screaming and I thought she was having a bad dream! Apparently is was like a huge train going past the window - a very low frequency noise and shaking. I am pretty miffed I missed it!
Share your experiences if you felt it!

Have Cardiff been ripped off?
I honestly think the answer is a resounding yes.
Cardiff have just paid £45,000 for a new logo, and they’ve been diddled. The BBC reports this here, and there are some very interesting comments. The one that stood out to me was the fact that the Greek Tourism logo looks suspiciously similar. Ready for the comparison? Here we go…..

Hmmmm……. I think the design team need to resign on this one!! The Cardiff website is here (looking like something from 2000) and the Greek site is here. Just how much research was done? Did nobody see this other logo? To be honest, I don’t mind the Cardiff logo, and yes, it doesn’t have anything obviously Welsh in it like Daffodils etc.
Logos can cause some strong opinions
Logos are historically very tricky things to produce, not least for the potential backlash from the public. Lets face it, not everyone will like it, will they? How can you please everyone? Answer - you can’t and won’t. Another notorious logo which didn’t get a good reception is our Olympic logo. A huge amount of bad press (click). This one cost £400,000.
But logos can turn into iconic images
If you do get a logo right, then it really can help your brand / company in terms of recognition and people wanting to be associated with it. What are your favourite logos?

Start Slide Show with PicLens LiteSocial network “fad” over in UK?
Big headlines this week saying that Social Networks in the Uk have seen a drop in use over the past few months.
Do you think this rings true? I know of plenty of non-techy people / non-geeks who use the likes of Facebook. But, that it is about it. I don’t think they use anything else. Perhaps LinkedIn if they are more professional in terms of their jobs. The big question for me is what benefits do a social network give to their users?
Benefits
- Finding old friends (Facebook)
- Job networking (LinkedIn)
- Fun and friendship (MySpace)
- Experience and excitement (Second Life)
Personally
I am not a huge fan of the traditional social networks like Facebook / LinkedIn. They just don’t give me that much value to me. I am a big fan of forums - they are the segment of social communication that I use the most. From Apple Discussions, Briskoda to Detailing World. All great places to get ideas and most importantly ask questions and get answers. flickr is another example of a great website which encourages community and interaction.
Businesses must pay attention
With so many questions being asked and so many answers being given online, consumers are starting to spend a long time researching purchases or getting feedback online. Forums are perfect places to get honest, straight feedback on products and services. People will not pull any punches. If they have a good experience, they may tell people. If they have a bad experience, they most certainly will. (I was a perfect example of this recently when I had bad job done on my car paintwork).
A business must pay attention to what is being said online, especially in Social Networks and Forums. They need to manage their online reputation and have the opportunity to step in and engage people directly, making sure they are open and honest and tell people exactly who they are.
I’ve recently started advising clients on exactly this, but it is still amazing that a large proportion of businesses are still in the dark ages around web marketing and social networks. If you need help, please do drop me an email or ring me.
