Are Google Recession Proof?

January 31, 2008 · Filed Under Google, Internet · Comment

Here is an interesting article from Wired about Google and whether or not they are “recession proof”. The actual article is referring to the US market, but as we all know, it looks like we could be heading the same way.

What really caught my eye was the information that in the previous recessions, direct mail grew, and Google’s main business model, is very like direct mail. Targeted relevant advertising. Direct mail works when it is relevant and it is targeted, and guess what? If you are looking for cheap flights to New York on Google, a load of adverts appear advertising just that. Not rocket science, but by ‘eck lad, it sure does work.

Google ads do work, and many people spend a great deal of money on them. Large or small, many businesses see that they almost HAVE to have a Google Adword presence, just to be in the game. It is certainly something I will be doing very shortly once my main websites are ready.

Do any of you run Google Adwords campaigns? I would be intrested to hear your thoughts in them, and especially, if they work for you.

Better UK iPhone Tariffs!

January 29, 2008 · Filed Under Apple stuff · 1 Comment

Some very rare good news from 02! Better iPhone tariffs!
Picture 4-4

Being a £55 per month customer, it means I get a £10 reduction on my monthly bill, which is not to be sneezed at, especially with the price of diesel going the way it is, i.e. up, up up! I am not sure why they have done this, maybe to attract the customers who thought they were getting a bad deal (and I have to agree that the £35 tariff was rubbish value previously) or maybe something to do with the kickback that Apple gets changing. Anyway, to put it bluntly, I do not care. It means £10 more in my pocket per month, and that is good news!

MacHeads The Movie

January 27, 2008 · Filed Under Apple stuff · Comment

Check out the trailer here. It’s an interesting take on the power of the brand and looking at the growing power of Apple, and whether or not they are losing their magic. Perhaps even getting too big for their own good?

The trailer shows the loyal devotion of many people to the Cult of Mac. Why do people have such a strong reaction / attraction to a few brands, Apple being one of the most well known ones?

Reasons for the Cult of Mac

  1. Coolness
  2. Community
  3. Design
  4. Individuality
  5. Design again!
  6. Easy to use
  7. Fun to use
  8. Makes me smile (a bit like good adverts!)
  9. It’s not Windoze
  10. It’s not Microsh*te

Any other reasons? Any other brands that inspire such loyalty? I am struggling to think of one to be honest! Hmmm, thinking cap on.

Great adverts make me smile

January 27, 2008 · Filed Under Life in general · Comment

Big thanks to Richard for posting a series of superb ads on his blog – well worth a look.
It goes to show, there is no excuse for a poor ad. There is so much scope to be humourous, fun, clever, thought-provoking and above all memorable. I love ads which make me smile and think.
