So, after nearly 3 years, I drove the Lotus up to Hexham Horseless Carriages and said good bye. It was great car - sounded superb (once decatted and with an induction kit though), handled like a go-kart, but sucked for long journeys and not very practical at all!

You shall be missed Lenny!

Problems on MacPro - help please!

Problems on MacPro - help please!, originally uploaded by JonnyMoss.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am getting this line within open windows and sometimes even on the desktop wallpaper (the orange arrow shows an example). It is not always like this - seems very variable.I’m using a MacPro with the ATi card and running Leopard 10.5.1

It has just started happening after I installed Leopard - at least I think so, 90% sure but not 100%. I’ve made sure the connections on the graphics card are ok but am now at a loss as to what it is.Please help! Is it the graphics card on the way out?!?UPDATE - check this thread out - it is a recognised problem - just done the firmware update on the ATi card and still have the lines /artifacts - will clean the card tomorrow and report back :-(

Media Manipulation?

November 16, 2007 · Filed Under Apple stuff · 3 Comments

Jon Moss is Apple’s number one fan, you all know that, BUT, this does not sit right with me at all.

Poor old Phil Schiller looked like a frightened rabbit caught in the headlights! Ok, I think most other big corporates would also have this kind of “babysitting”, especially on a big day, but it still doesn’t feel right when you see it so close up and graphic.    What do you think guys n gals?  It’s been a VERY hectic week and so have not managed to update this much but I will try over the weekend. Lots to tell you! Have a top Friday!

Yes, I’m first in the queue at the Sheffield Apple Store!

November 9, 2007 · Filed Under Life in general · Comment

He he :-) Jamie and I are numbers one and two in the queue. It was a quick drive over to Sheffield from Hull and we got there just after 10am, when the Apple store opened.

Out with the camping chair and straight onto their WiFi on the iPod Touch. Marvellous! There are a few people here now, and have met Elliot, Vicki and Joey (met him with Nick Haley at the Leopard Launch. Not long to go now!

iPhone queue at Regent Street

November 8, 2007 · Filed Under Life in general · Comment

iPhone queue, originally uploaded by muggy.

Well, the queues have started! Apparently the first people were there at 8.30am this morning. The bad news is that it’s cold and wet, so I honestly don’t envy them!

I wonder how many people will be queuing by 6.02pm tomorrow evening? Quite a few I reckon!

I can remember seeing the iPhone for the first time, when Steve announced it in January at MacWorld. Everything suddenly changed in an instant. I don’t think people quite understand just how good the UI is until they actual handle one.

I have a prediction that my good friend Monsieur Ayres (who has not seen one, nor an iPod Touch, and who says he is happy with what he’s got) will be buying one! In fact, I will donate £10 to charity if he doesn’t get one within a month (that is if he is out of contract and able to change without penalty.

JA?! Any thoughts??!

Google phone is really all about software, not hardware

November 5, 2007 · Filed Under Apple stuff, Google · Comment

So, finally an official announcement about the Google Phone.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 5 — Google took its long-awaited plunge into the wireless world today, announcing that it is leading a broad industry alliance to transform mobile phones into powerful mobile computers that could accelerate the convergence of computing and communications.

Mobile phones based on Google’s software are not expected to be available until the second half of next year. They will be manufactured by a variety of handset companies, including HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung and be available in the United States through T-Mobile and Sprint.

The phones will also be available through the world’s largest mobile operator, China Telecom, with 332 million subscribers in China, and the leading carriers in Japan, NTT DoCoMo and KDDI, as well as T-Mobile in Germany, Telecom Italia in Italy and Telefónica in Spain.

But for now at least, Google will not put its brand on a phone. The software running on the phones may not even display the Google logo. Instead, Google is giving the software away to others who will build the phones. The company invested heavily in the project to ensure that all of its services are available on mobile phones. Its ultimate goal is to cash in on the effort by selling advertisements to mobile phone users, just as it does on Internet-connected computers.

“We are not building a GPhone; we are enabling 1,000 people to build a GPhone,” said Andy Rubin, Google’s director of mobile platforms, who led the effort to develop the software.

Fascinating news, and the thing that really stand out for me, that syncs so well with this announcement, is last week’s anouncement about their OpenSocial API. There is a HUGE potential for developers to utilise the OpenSocial APIs with the Google phone software. I can see some very exciting possibilities, with the potential of going well beyond what we currently have available. Will Apple be worried? I don’t think so at this point in time… but with Google being so close to Apple, it may cause a few noses to be put out of shape. I wonder if Steve knew about this … you would think so with Eric Scmidt being on the board of Apple directors.

I would love to see Google and Apple working more closely together on mobiles. I hope this does not cause too much of a rift.

UPDATE - great write up on the possibilities of what a Google software phone COULD do from Wired.

Great article on how O2 brought the iPhone to the UK

November 5, 2007 · Filed Under Apple stuff, Life in general, Tech · 2 Comments

Well worth a read! Click here for the Telegraph story.

It’s less than 5 days to go until the iPhone hits the UK and it is going to hit it hard. I can imagine it will be a particularly rough Xmas for Orange, T-Mobile and Vodaphone….

Initially my plans were to go to London and the Regent Street store, but times have changed and Sheffield is now between the cross hairs! I am lucky to have some support in the shape of Mr Adams who will be joining me for our assault on the Apple store. I do need to ring them to get an idea of their plans. Due to the Apple Store being in Meadowhell shopping centre I am not sure how they are going to do the queuing. I have a suspicion that people MAY be queuing overnight, ready for the 6pm launch. I don’t think (at this point in time) that I want to do that…. but you never know! Watch this space for more planning action!
