Stephen Fry and Apple

Well I never, one of my favourite people / actors, a man blessed with wit, wisdom and cunning. Someone who I have huge respect for, is a Mac fanboy. Bloody good show I say.
Not only is he using an iPhone already, as outlined on his blog (have a look here) but he counts Jonny Ives as a mate! Oh man, what I would give to have dinner with these two chaps….
Anyway, Mr Fry has also started writing a weekly technology column for the Gaurdian and also appears online here. He writes so well, with wonderful prose and humour. The fact that he writes things like this, is the icing on the cake…
So you can guess that I certainly do think design is important. But it doesn’t have to come from Apple. In fact, I wish to goodness it came from everywhere. I hope you’ll believe I’m not an unthinking slave to Cupertino. Apple gets plenty of small things wrong, but one big thing it gets right: when you use a device every day, you cannot help, as a human being, but have an emotional relationship with it.

Fame at last
I had an email from Spiegel Online (German Time magazine equivalent apparently) and they wanted the scoop on meeting Nick Haley at the Leopard Launch. I answered a couple of their questions and they then linked to the blog post, resulting in 1800 hits on Monday! A small snapshot of the article is above this and the whole thing is here, but in German!

Nick’s awesome ad
A rather amazing Leopard Launch !
Coincidence
A word I do not use too often, but I certainly can use it tonight writing this!
You know those times when you think, blimey, that is a bit spooky? Well, it was also one of those moments! I had gone to the Sheffield Apple Store (UK) for the Leopard Launch and got there way too early (me being keen and excited I guess). Anyway, I had a go on Leopard, as it was already installed on the machines in the store, and it looked and felt great. After a quick coffee and some food I settled down to wait outside the store and luckily enough, I was the first to start queuing. As promised, the store shut at 4pm and some barriers were put outside and a few more people turned up, including Nick and Joey, local students. At this point, everything seemed very normal.
Meeting people is all part of the fun
So, Nick, Joey and I chatted, the queue got a little bigger, and I started using the iPod Touch…… Earlier in the morning, I had been reading my feeds via Google Reader and had picked up on a great story about a student, called Nick Haley, who had created an iPod Touch advert. He had made the advert, uploaded it to YouTube at the beginning of September and it had received some very positive comments. Out of the blue, he had then been contacted by Apple’s ad agency saying they wanted to speak to him about using his clip for the actual advert for the iPod Touch! How cool is that! (it is actually being used and has its first showing on tomorrow). I watched the video on YouTube and also read the article which had appeared on the New York Times website. I had thought, what a superb story, tagged it in Reader and thought no more of it.
You are kidding me, right?!
Thought no more of it until I was using the Touch and mentioned the advert to Nick (alarm bells started ringing yet?!) and Joey. I said how cool it was and had they seen it? It was at this point that Nick smiled, and I asked what was so funny? It was at this point I remembered the article saying it was a guy called Nick from Leeds and I started thinking, surely not ……. I asked if he knew anything about this advert and he proceeded to show me the clip on the iPodTouch via YouTube, and lo and behold, it was posted by a guy called Nick Haley (major alarm bells going off now) and he explained that he was indeed, THE Nick Haley! You can see why I started this post with the word coincidence! Like Whoa! Amazing! These things never seem to happen to me, which is why I was so amazed and really made the whole launch experience even better! Nick was a great guy, extremely humble, could not say too much due to NDAs and a real pleasure to chat with. Here is the man himself outside the Sheffield Apple Store

I really hope he makes a career of this kind of thing, and I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of him in the future. So, a great experience, and after all that it was also brilliant to go through the doors, snag my Leopard T shirt and actually buy a copy of the nest OS out there! I’ve installed it on the MBP (all good) and am will sort out the MacPro when something arrives next week - tune back in then for my super-duper install strategy!

So, if you have Apple’s new wireless keyboard, you will have seen the power light which mysteriously shines and then disappears with no trace. Well wonder no longer about how this happens because swmooretiger from flickr whipped his keyboard into a lab and got the microscope out!
Looks like laser cut holes are the answer! Apple’s design thought process and the resulting design really is rather good.

As of today, Apple are worth 3 x more than Dell, and more than IBM and HP. That is pretty damn impressive.
As many, many people are saying around the blogosphere today, why oh why did I not buy their shares 10 years ago (because you didn’t even know what a Mac was then you plum - Ed)

Start Slide Show with PicLens LiteLess than 2 days to go!
Ok, I am getting quite excited now. Only two days to go until Leopard arrives! There are over 300 new features, but one that really stands out is spaces. Check the video below:
This really does look slick - will be very useful considering all the stuff I have open at any one time. The sad thing is that something VERY similar was already available - called virtuedesktops, and it was pretty good. When spaces was announced, the developer just stopped the project and this was his last post on the site. This has happened before, when Apple have launched something that someone else has been trying to get off the ground. I cannot remember the other example that did come to mind, can anyone? It is a shame, but there is not a lot that can be done to stop it. Apple is rather powerful and very committed!
